NEW YORK - On June the 11th at the Ichan Stadium at Randels Island the adidas track and field event took place, on what was overcast, drizzly and chilly kind of a day. The terrain was wet to the point where Blanka Vlasic, the star of the high jump was mopping up puddles of water with a towel several feet from the pole. The journey of an athlete in the world of track and field is a lonely one, it’s the road, the pole verses the will of the athlete.
The race to the finish line is very exciting to the point where the spectators of the entire stadium are up on their feet, in a state of excited awe. One of the most exciting races you will ever see is the 100 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash won by Daniella Carruthers from the US and Steve Mulings from Jamaica, respectively. Tyson Gay, the favorite came in second in the 100 meter dash, same can be said for our Croatian high jumper Blanka Vlasic. “This was not my best performance by far this year. The weather/field condition had a lot to do with my mediocre performance. I need to look ahead and focus on the upcoming meets and try to perform better,” said the world renowned high jumper. The high jump takes grace/form/strength all combined into that one thrust that propels the jumper hopefully over the pole. There were many Jamaican fans on hand cheering on their runners as well as American fans along with a few Croatian fans including Tomislav Petrisic (Statan Island resident), with his young daughters both of whom are participants in track and field.
